A benefits package can be valuable without increasing the money available for rent or groceries. When comparing salary with benefits in Kenya, keep three figures separate: cash received, the tax cost of a benefit and the expense that benefit genuinely saves you.

Start with the salary comparison calculator for the cash salaries. Then use the salary breakdown guide and the benefit details to build a personal comparison.

Sort the offer into four categories

CategoryWhat to check
Regular cashBasic pay and allowances already included in gross salary.
Non-cash benefitsWhat you receive, its payroll tax valuation and any employee charge.
Deferred benefitsPension contributions, access conditions and any vesting rules.
Conditional paymentsBonus criteria, approval and whether the amount is guaranteed.

Do not add a house or commuter allowance twice if it already forms part of the quoted gross. The cash allowances guide explains why the label alone does not make cash tax-free.

Employer cost is not your personal value

An employer might describe a benefit as costing KES 8,000 per month. That does not mean it adds KES 8,000 to your bank balance, saves you that amount, or has that taxable value. Ask for all three figures separately.

For medical cover, compare the actual cover schedule: eligible dependants, provider network, limits, exclusions and any employee premium. KRA lists employer medical cover among employment income not chargeable to PAYE; a cash medical allowance is a different arrangement. Ask payroll which treatment applies to the exact offer.

Allow for tax on non-cash benefits

A taxable car or housing benefit can increase the PAYE bill without increasing cash earnings. Ask the employer for the payroll valuation rather than entering the vehicle's purchase price or the employer's full cost as monthly income. Our benefits-in-kind guide covers that distinction.

As a narrow illustration, if an additional KES 10,000 of taxable benefit falls wholly within a 30% band and nothing else changes, the extra PAYE is KES 3,000. The benefit has not paid you KES 10,000 cash; you must assess its usefulness against the KES 3,000 tax cost and any employee charge. This is not a valuation formula for a car or home.

Value savings you will actually make

Suppose package A provides KES 75,000 net cash and cover that would replace KES 4,000 of your own monthly spending. Package B provides KES 78,000 net cash without that cover. On those assumed facts, A offers KES 79,000 of cash plus avoided expenditure versus B's KES 78,000, but only KES 75,000 is spendable salary.

These are decision examples, not calculated payroll quotations. If you would not buy equivalent cover, or the policies differ materially, the assumed KES 4,000 saving needs revising. Do not count the same avoided expense again in your monthly budget.

Keep retirement savings and bonuses separate

Employer pension funding may improve long-term value but cannot automatically pay today's bills. Check the scheme terms and employee contribution required. Keep a discretionary bonus outside the guaranteed monthly budget, then model it as a separate upside scenario.

Before accepting, obtain a written package breakdown and sample payroll calculation. Use the pension saving trade-offs to judge liquidity, and compare the full offers using the two-offer worksheet.
