To check your SHA contributions, start with the official Afya Yangu member service and compare the record for the relevant month with your payslip or payment receipt. If you cannot see an itemised contribution record, ask SHA to trace the payment. A salary deduction, a registered account and an active coverage result answer different questions.

Checking whether the deduction itself looks right? Use our Kenya PAYE calculator to estimate SHIF alongside your other salary deductions. The calculator estimates payroll amounts; it cannot access your SHA account or confirm that an employer paid the money across.

Know which record you need

SHA is the Social Health Authority, which administers the Social Health Insurance Fund, or SHIF. For a salaried employee, SHA says the employer is responsible for calculating and remitting the contribution. See its official contribution guidance.

What you want to establishWhat to checkWhat it does not establish by itself
Your account is registered correctlyYour member details through the official member serviceThat every monthly deduction has been received
A particular payment reached your accountThe contribution record or a payment trace confirmed by SHAThat every treatment or facility is covered
Your current coverage statusSHA's official eligibility checkerA month-by-month statement of employer payments
The expected salary deductionYour payroll calculation and the PAYE calculatorThat the estimated amount was actually remitted

Start at the official Afya Yangu member portal

  1. Open SHA's official website and follow Login → Members → Member Portal, or go directly to afyayangu.go.ke. SHA lists the employer and healthcare-provider portals separately.
  2. Sign in to your own member account using the prompts currently displayed. Confirm that the member details belong to you before comparing any records.
  3. If the account displays contribution or payment transactions, check the amount, payment reference and period attached to each entry. Match them to the same payroll month or assessed payment period.
  4. Keep any available receipt or statement. If you see only registration or coverage information, or cannot find the period you need, ask SHA for an itemised contribution record or payment trace through the contact routes below.

Menu wording can change. A screen saying that you are registered or covered is not a substitute for the monthly payment evidence you are trying to reconcile. Keep your PIN and verification codes private.

Check coverage separately

The official SHA eligibility checker is labelled as a coverage-status service. Its public form asks for an identification type and number, and says that a National ID or CR number can be used.

Select the relevant identification type, enter your own details and use the Check button. Note the result and the date you checked. If you are investigating a missing deduction, continue with the payment checks below even if the coverage result looks reassuring.

Before planned treatment, ask the facility to confirm the applicable benefit, access requirements and any authorisation needed. SHA publishes separate benefit tariffs and access rules; a coverage result alone does not promise payment of every hospital bill.

Can you check through *147#?

SHA lists *147# as an official mobile channel on its contact page. Dial the code and follow the current prompts for your own account. Use any result for the information it actually gives you: a coverage message, for example, does not provide an itemised history of remittances.

If the available menu does not answer your payment question, request help from SHA. Do not rely on an old screenshot's numbered menu options or assume that an SMS registration confirmation proves a later payroll payment was received.

Your payslip shows a deduction, but the payment is missing

Start with payroll. Ask for the evidence for the specific month, rather than a general assurance that the company pays SHA. Our guide to reading a Kenyan payslip helps identify the pay period and the relevant deduction.

  • The amount deducted from your pay for that month.
  • The date the employer submitted and paid the contribution.
  • The payment reference and the record showing your individual allocation.
  • The identification or member details used for your entry.
  • Any correction, reversal or adjustment affecting that month.

A useful request is: “Please confirm the SHA remittance for my [month and year] deduction of KES [amount], including the payment date, reference and my individual contribution entry. I need to reconcile it with my SHA record.”

For example, suppose a September payslip shows a KES 1,375 deduction, but the member record you can obtain only accounts for payments through August. An employer's receipt for its entire workforce would not, on its own, resolve that difference. Ask payroll to identify your September entry, then ask SHA to trace that entry against the reference. This is an illustration of the checking process, not evidence that a particular employer has failed to pay.

Compare the contribution period as well as the transaction date. If a record is unclear, ask which month the payment was allocated to. A difference could require a payroll correction or a payment-allocation investigation; the payslip alone cannot tell you which.

If you pay your own contributions

Keep your payment receipt and compare its amount, reference, member details and covered period with the assessment and record provided by SHA. Ask SHA to trace a transaction that does not match. Get the existing payment reconciled before treating a missing display as proof that you must pay the same amount again.

SHA's contribution guidance distinguishes salaried deductions from the means-tested household assessment for people outside formal employment. A salary calculator does not replace that household assessment. Our SHIF deductions guide explains the payroll side.

Where to get a missing payment checked

SHA's official contact and branch directory lists 0800 720 601 as a toll-free number, customerservice@sha.go.ke for enquiries and complaints@sha.go.ke for complaints. It also lists county offices if you need in-person assistance.

Have the contribution month, amount, payment reference and relevant payslip or receipt ready. Explain whether your problem is a missing transaction, a payment assigned to the wrong period, incorrect member details or a coverage-status result. Ask what evidence is needed and retain any reference given for the enquiry. Share personal records through the official support route rather than posting them publicly.

Once the record is reconciled, use the PAYE calculator to cross-check your expected SHIF deduction and take-home pay. For the wider picture, see our guide to statutory salary deductions. The calculation and the contribution record should be checked separately.
